The mid-face lift
The cheek and the area beneath the eye are usually where facial ageing announces itself first, long before the jawline goes.
People often notice it as looking tired rather than looking older. The cheek loses its height, a shadow forms beneath the eye, and the fold beside the nose deepens. Rest does not fix it, because the change is positional rather than a matter of sleep.
What a mid-face lift does
It restores height and position to the cheek, which softens the hollow under the eye and the fold beside the mouth. Because the tissue is repositioned rather than filled, the face keeps its own shape instead of gaining volume it never had.
Alone, or as part of a facelift
In younger faces where the jaw and neck have not yet changed, the mid-face can be addressed on its own. More often it is included within a deep plane facelift, because the deep plane technique releases the ligaments of the mid-face by design, lifting the cheek and jaw together as one unit.
This is the difference described in deep plane vs SMAS: a SMAS lift concentrates along the jaw, while the deep plane frees the mid-face as well.
Why fillers are not the same thing
Fillers restore volume where volume has been lost, and used well they can be very effective. What they cannot do is lift. Adding volume to tissue that has descended can make a face read as heavy rather than younger. Which problem you actually have is a question for an in-person assessment.
Mid-Face Lift, answered
What is a mid-face lift?+
A mid-face lift restores height and position to the cheek and the area beneath the eye, where facial ageing often shows first. Tissue is repositioned rather than filled, so the face keeps its own shape.
Is a mid-face lift better than fillers?+
They address different problems. Fillers restore lost volume; a mid-face lift repositions tissue that has descended. Using filler to chase a lift can make the face look heavy. Which one suits you is decided at consultation.
Can a mid-face lift be done on its own?+
Sometimes, particularly in younger faces where the jaw and neck have not yet changed. More often the mid-face is addressed within a deep plane facelift, which releases the mid-face ligaments as part of the technique.
